Meetings: The East Side Literary Club meets Mondays, twice a month from 7:00
- 9:00pm, from March through December. (No meetings during January and February
due to inclement weather). Each meeting is held at a different member's home
and begins with a business meeting, followed by some type of program and book
review of the presenter's choosing. A yearly schedule is handed out at the
September social.
Aside from the regular meetings, a Christmas Party/Dinner is held in December,
and during the summer, a special "outing" is planned.
Membership: New members must be nominated first, by an active group member,
and then backed by two other members of the club. This candidate then must
be voted in by ballot. Membership shall be limited to twenty-five. The Club
meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month.
Annual Dues: $2.00/person. Donation: A freewill collection is taken at each
meeting.
Community Projects: Throughout the year, the group participates in several
projects that benefit the community. These efforts are made possible by a "freewill
collection" taken at each Club meeting. One such effort is the "Books
on Tape" project. This recording program, started in 1998, is geared toward
preschoolers and primary aged children. A children's book is donated, along
with a taped version of the story, read by one of the book club members. They
are given to the Primary School for use in the Parent Resource Corner. They
have also donated books to the Oxford Library to honor the memory of members
that have passed away. In addition, the Club members also participate in the
Community Christmas Basket Project. As part of a social outreach program, for
the past two years the East Siders have also given gifts to several residents
of the Valley View Nursing Home in Norwich, who do not have any family. They
continue to send cards to them for their birthdays and other special occasions.
Scholarship: The book club also provides scholarships for the highest English
score held by a student in grades six and eight.
